CITRUS FRUITS

Citrus fruits are among the world’s most cultivated species, as they are appreciated for their delicious flavour. Citrus fruits belong to the genus Citrus; they originally come from tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and the Malay Archipelago; they have been grown for 4,000 years and have been spreading to different places over time.

MANDARINS

Mandarins are the fruit of different species of citrus trees. Their pulp is divided in a large number of segments filled with juice, which is rich in vitamin C, flavonoids and essential oils. It closely resembles oranges, but in a smaller size, with a more aromatic flavour and a skin that is easier to peel. It also has a slightly lower acidity and a higher proportion of simple sugars. These features have resulted in it being considered a natural sweet of easy consumption for people of all ages.

The main production areas of FCE mandarins are the regions of Lima, Ica and Junín and the varieties intended for export are:

  • Satsuma: Of all mandarins it is the most resistant to cold temperatures and also the first to ripen. They are used industrially for the production of canned segments in syrup of juice, as they don’t have seeds.
  • Malvaceo (Ellendale): It is believed to be a natural tangor (mandarin and sweet orange hybrid). It has a large size, bright orange colour, its skin comes off easily and the pulp is tender, juicy and tasty. It contains seeds.
  • Nadarcott: Late ripening variety. It is very attractive because of its bright orange colour, intense aroma and irresistible flavour. Moreover, it is easy to peel and can have few or no seeds when grown under isolated conditions.
  • Minneola: It is a mandarin/grapefruit hybrid. Its size is similar to that of an orange; it tastes like a mandarin, but juicier. This variety has loose skin and is easier to peel than oranges; it is easily distinguished from oranges because of its stem-end neck, which makes it appear bell-shaped.
